Sunflower Field Senior Portraits

For the past few years, a local farm has planted fields full of sunflowers and other assorted flowers.  Once everything is in bloom, the fields are opened to the public to come explore and inevitably, photograph.  As soon as some images were on social media, photographers flocked to the location with clients.

It’s not hard to see why.  The fields are beautiful and the owners very smartly located numerous props throughout the field for photographers to use.  From an old looking desk and chairs to a vintage tricycle, there is something for everyone.

Last evening I met a friend and her daughter to take some senior pictures.  The lighting was a bit harsh at first, but quickly became just about perfect.  It was a pretty even mix of natural light and shots with a remote flash fired through a 24″ softbox to add some pop.

I used my 2 primary cameras, a Fuji X-T5 with the Fringer adapted Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 zoom and a Leica M10 with either a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 Nokton Classic II or a TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4 ASPH.

Everything worked great and I’m quite happy with how everything turned out.  While the X-T5 was the workhorse of the day, the Leica M10 images just seem to pop a bit and add a touch of depth.  Focus was surprisingly easy with it.  My only issue with the M10 is still trying to learn how the metering works on the camera.  I’m still just going to all manual and chimping until I get it right.
